Do I really need to register my trademark?

I have a name, and I'm not sure if in the future (near future), I use this name my company ID (product / service). Since then, I thought this unique name, would have legal rights in this regard (if copies someone else s'). I went through the registration of the mark http://www.uspto.gov/teas/teasplus.htm, cost $ 275 / $ 325 (and not even say if year/10 years). Does anyone (who intends to offer a service / product) to go through this process, and many others say facebook free online services .., recorded their brand?? "I can use "TM" (exponent) in front of my name, although I did not apply for trademark registration?? All ideas are appreciated?
