What is an open relationship?

One of my Facebook friends reported that she is in an open relationship. I've never heard of anyone do before. What does this mean exactly? I do not want to ask you directly because I will not be an idiot or climbing.

Well, wonder some of us, its basically the terms of every day, they are "dating" has many free and able to connect with other people. Well, I've seen my friends dating therefore have a year to study abroad, so do not risk cheating, that "open" their relationship. and when they return is closed. Honestly, I think, a little weird and strange. no points out with somebody if they arent doors and windows closed ….
