Anchored backlinks is touted as the main strategy to getting your site or blog to the top of the search engine rankings for your desired keyword.  It has been said that there is not such thing as too many backlinks, and that if you are not ranking high enough in Google, just get more backlinks.

In this article, I would like to list the various ways that are commonly used to get anchored backlinks to your website or blog.

Backlinking From Your Own Sites

You can start several different websites and blogs on different aspects of the same topic or on related topics.  In fact, you can do both.  Then you can link all of them together so that they point to each other.  Or you can have a main site and have all your other sites point to that one site.

Post To Forums, Blogs And Web Directories

Submitting your website to the relevant directories is a good way of getting an anchored backlink.  Another way would be to participate in forums, in which you are usually allowed a backlink to your website in your signature.  You can also comment in blogs, in which there usually is a field where you can leave a link to your website or blog.

Getting A Third Party To Post Your Link

To work this technique, you need to get out there and ask other people to link to your website.  In many respects, this is harder that the previous 2 techniques, but pays handsome dividends as these type of links are considered to be of a higher quality by the search engines.

I have listed below the more standard ways of getting anchored backlinks from webmasters and third party websites below.  These are by no means the only ways and you are encouraged to come up with better and more innovative ways and ways that are more suitable for your talents and resources.

  • Exchange Links With Other Websites. The idea behind this technique is simple – we do each other a favor.  As the title suggests, the webmasters involved will place backlinks to each other’s sites.  Usually, the links will be from link directories or from the home pages.  More recently, the practice of linking between blog posts, or from within the content of a website, has become commonplace.
  • Link Bait. In this technique, you come up with content so good that you don’t even have to ask for a link.  The webmasters will automatically link to you because it enhances the value of their site.  Stuff that is humorous, controversial or downright weird would work well.
  • Give Away A Free Gift. First, make sure you get the rights to the product so that you can legally include some links in the product to your website or blog.  And then, you give away the product to anybody and everybody that wants it.  If you can’t get the rights to the product, you can always request for a backlink in return for a free download of the product.

Conclusion

Things have changed so much since the early days of the Internet.  Nowadays, with social sites like Facebook, Twitter and others, it is sometimes as easy as just asking for a link.  However, the competition for links has also increased, so you will still need to stand out with quality content.  After all is said and done, the phrase: “Content is king” still holds true.
